ZF Sachs Formula Clutch

ZF Sachs Formula Clutch

For all forms of auto sports, ZF Sachs Race Engineering GmbH offers a wide range of carbon clutches.

Sachs Formula Clutches are applied in Touring Car Championships and World Rally Championship up to Formula 1. The entire carbon clutch range benefits from the latest technology developed in Formula 1.

Advantages of a carbon clutch in comparison with a sinter-metallic clutch are:

  • Lower weight
  • Lower moment of inertia
  • Improved start modulation
  • Superior thermal properties
  • No wear of the flywheel since it is not used as a friction partner
  • Longer life-time

The clutch housing material can be high quality aluminum, steel or titanium alloys. The friction material is high quality carbon fibre /carbon which can withstand temperatures of up to 2000º C. Clutches are available in single-, twin-, triple- and four-plate versions.

Sachs Carbon Clutches are designed with a focus on:

  • Minimum weight
  • Minimum moment of inertia
  • Minimum dimensions
  • Maximum strength
  • Optimal performance

Carbon clutches are available with nominal diameters ranging from 86 to 200 mm. Apart from that, suitable, well-proven release systems are available, as well as customer specific flywheels, starter gear rings and fasteners. During the design phase all components are optimized with the help of repeated FEA calculations. Heavily loaded components, such as the diaphragm spring, undergo complex fatigue tests before use. The friction discs are specially matched and have to pass an approval procedure in order to constantly guarantee excellent clutch engagement behavior.

DTM: Jamie Green wins thriller at the Norisring

The third round of the DTM season at the Norisring will enter the history books as one of the most thrilling ever. The seven fastest drivers crossed the finish line within just 3.8 seconds. The beaming winner after 80 laps in front of 132,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) was Jamie Green whose 2008-spec Mercedes-C-Class is fitted with aclutch from ZF Sachs Race Engineering. Behind Bruno Spengler (Mercedes) Mattias Ekström finished in third place.

All Audi A4 DTM cars are equipped with clutches from Schweinfurt as well. Ekström’s team-mate Timo Scheider looked like the winner for a long time but an aggressive overtaking manoeuvre on the first of the final three laps on the only city street circuit on the DTM calendar put Green in front. Scheider can take consolation from the fact that he will go to the fourth round of the season at Zandvoort in the Netherlands three weeks from now as the leader of the standings.
